First dates are always going to be nerve-wrecking. You can’t get away from all the stresses and strains associated with meeting someone for the first time, so it’s no wonder that many of us choose to hit the pub to take the edge off. A few glasses of wine might seem like a good idea, but we all know it can lead to bad decisions and the dreaded beer goggles.
Alcohol-free dating, while a big leap, allows you to get to know someone without worrying about a clear head. It also actively pushes you to be a bit more creative in how, where and when you date.
The most obvious alternatives are sporting in nature – surfing, tennis or just beach walking for example. The rush of adrenaline and endorphins from exercise will get you laughing and chatting in no time at all.
Alternatively, try something a little more upmarket. Art galleries are an amazing place to stimulate conversation, or maybe browsing in bookshops is more your speed. Whether you’re looking for the latest blockbuster or winner of a literary prize, or are more intent instead on tracking down rare first editions, a shared love of reading is a great way to find common ground.
Perhaps you’re a foodie – in which case, farmer’s markets in the morning make for an excellent start to the day where you can eat and drink to start yourself off, while still having the excuse of other commitments if you feel it’s just not working out. Or perhaps, if it is working out, you can look at cooking classes to attend together.
If none of these ideas appeal, then how about doing something for charity? There are schemes all over the country, ranging from soup kitchens to clearing rubbish or conservation work out in the bush. Doing something worthwhile is a great bonding experience, while it also introduces you to other like-minded people.
Take a chance and do something different. Good luck.
