For the most part, we’re all here looking for The One – someone to share our lives as we toddle along into the sunset and concentrate on having the time of our lives. For many people, there’s nothing more romantic than getting dressed to the nines, heading out to a restaurant and dropping to one knee to pop the question. But here in Australia we have the advantage of some amazing locations that make the moment even more memorable and special.
Even if you’re not looking for that perfect place to propose, the places listed here are stunning places to take a date in their own right, guaranteed to give you both those ‘wow’ moments to treasure.
- Fly over Heart Reef – it’s going to be hard to beat flying over the world-famous heart-shaped island in the Whitsundays, Queensland. Three hour adventure flights on a seaplane are easy to arrange and make for a spectacular trip.
- At the top of the Story Bridge in Brisbane – staying with the theme of being up above it all, climb the bridge and use the “engagement ring device” provided by the climb organisers to produce the ring right at the top without risking dropping it along the way.
- Take in an Uluru sunset in the Northern Territory – if you’re going for big romantic moments, you’ll be hard pressed to beat stepping into a landscape that’s so famous. Book a private viewing area with a romantic bottle of champagne and you’ll not go far wrong.
- Ashcombe Maze in Victoria – for something a bit more unusual, try this maze in the Mornington Peninsula. Various proposals have included a romantic table with roses and wine in the centre, or a scavenger hunt with questions only the bride-to-be would know leading to the prospective groom, and staff are more than willing to help with special arrangements.
- The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Cairns, Queensland – as long as you’re not afraid of heights, these glass gondolas make for truly impressive places to pop the question. A quick arrangement with the Skyrail operators will make sure you get one to yourselves for the moment of truth.
- On top of Mount Warning, New South Wales – as the first place to see the sunrise in Australia, where better to symbolise a new start, even if it’s a bit of a trek in the dark to the top?
- Over Honeymoon Gap in the Northern Territory – while we’re talking about hanging around high in the air, the Gap in the East MacDonnell Ranges is one of nature’s most amazing views. Hire a helicopter and they’ll help position you for the perfect moment.
- Try the Lidgbird Pavilion at Capella Lodge, Lord Howe Island – this amazing location gives you the best of both traditional private gourmet eating and amazing sea and mountain views for a breathtaking day.
- On a rollercoaster at Dreamworld, Gold Coast – if you’re looking for something truly out of the ordinary and have nerves of steel then why not go for it at the top of the tallest freefall rollercoaster in the world. You’ve got about fifteen seconds at the top to pop the question and the love of your life has maybe four seconds to say yes at the top of the world.
- The Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat near Broome – for something a little more sedate, try an isolated beach cave in Western Australia. Take along a picnic and some champagne and pick your moment.
By no means an exhaustive list, take your date or your prospective spouse to any of these places and we guarantee you memories you’ll cherish for the rest of your lives.
